Simplicity is highly regarded in our world today. Yet, for whatever reason, we believe that we need something new to simplify our lives. For instance, to simplify their lives, many people will try a productivity app on their phones. This leads to just one more thing on our to-do list that wears us out. We find that our brains are even more over-loaded and exhausted at the end of the day. As a result, we download another mindfulness app to try to take our minds off of it. We might even attempt to go for a nice, long, relaxing walk. Yet, when we do, we find that our mind is still racing. At Colaw Fitness, we want to authentically help our members to simplify their lives.
Ronald Rolheiser once said that our aim is to live simply and lightly. We could not agree more. We tend to burden ourselves with a heavy yoke in order to make something of ourselves. Yet, we often find that it simply reveals our shortcomings. With this in mind, we want to work to simplify our lives. Likewise, we want to experience real rest that we could not experience otherwise. With this in mind, we are going to have to do something a little different to truly experience this. As a result, we hope that you will consider joining us at Colaw Fitness. Our minds are like an undisturbed, crystal-clear lake. When we set out across them, the water is clear and cool. We find ourselves unconcerned with frenetic activity or perfectionism. When something pressing comes to mind, it is like throwing a rock into our lake. Though it is disturbed for a moment, we find that it comes to rest shortly thereafter. Similarly, if it rains, the surface is disturbed. Yet, once it ceases, it softens again shortly thereafter. However, when the wind comes and disturbs the water in the midday, something else happens.
You may find that the water is disturb for some time. Check out our Arlington TX fitness center. This is the feeling of restlessness that we feel when our whole mind is occupied. Though we might slow down for a little while, the water is still disturb. Similarly, when we get off work after a long day, our mind is still racing even after the day is done. This is what leads many people to lie awake at night trying to let their minds rest. In order to think clearly at all, we have to allow our minds to come to a resting position. Not only this, but we also need to build a hedge around our lake. This means that we keep anything out that would continually stir the water. For some, this might be constant stimulation or being a busy body.
At Colaw Fitness, we work hard to make sure that our members get plenty of rest. We believe that God has ordained one day each week for us to rest from our work. This not only includes our occupations, but also the work that we do not get paid for. Check out our Arlington TX fitness center. Thus, we encourage people not to do chores around the house or begin any projects. By doing so, we cram another day of work into our already busy schedule. As a result, we find that we still do not feel rested. This day is the Sabbath. This is not simply a day off, though that is partly it. We do not use this day to catch up on chores or other jobs that we have.
There are six other days in the week for those things. We want to encourage our members to take a day to simply delight in the life we have. In doing so, we believe that you will live the other six days in a completely different way. You will reflect back on it for a few days. Then, you will be able to look forward to it for the remainder of the week. We think that this has the power to transform the way that you live. You will find that your mental and emotional lake will be much more still. Christian mystics call the moment that the lake is still “holy contemplation”. These are moments where reality is most clear, and we feel God closer than ever before.
Even those that are well-versed in this find that contemplation might only last about half an hour. Unfortunately, we tend to ruin it for ourselves. Once we become aware of the stillness of our own mind, we tend to fill it. The same can be said for our physical atmosphere. When we are all alone with ourselves in the quiet, we tend to find something to distract ourselves. We might put on some music or a movie. Check out our Arlington TX fitness center.
Thus, when we find space for inner quiet, we often goof it up by distracting ourselves. Our minds automatically fill the space with more noise; with more wind. In doing so, we miss out on that contemplation that the mystics speak so highly of. It is a strong effort of those in this tradition to seek it often. In order to do so, they practice silence, solitude, and stillness.
